Frantisek Kaberle, who won a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 and for whom he last suited up in 2009, has retired from the sport.

According to NHL.com on Thursday, Kaberle apparently retired quietly last month, and was not outed until a newspaper in his native Czech Republic revealed he was helping his wife with her business rather than prepare for the upcoming season in the Czech Extraliga.

The 38-year-old blueliner played nine seasons in North America from 1999 through 2009 for the Kings, Thrashers and Hurricanes. He racked up 29 goals and 193 points in 523 regular-season games, adding 14 points in 32 playoff tilts.

Kaberle totaled 12 goals and 48 points in 145 games in the Czech Republic over the last three seasons for three different clubs.
