Denver, CO – Mike Cammalleri scored the game-winner late in the second period, as the Calgary Flames ended their franchise-record road skid with a 3-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Monday at Pepsi Center.
Roman Cervenka and Alex Tanguay each scored once, while Joey MacDonald made 39 saves to help the Flames snap a 13-game road losing streak (0-12-1).
"It's been a long time," MacDonald said of his team's road woes. "We kept possession of the puck and did the small things we had to do."
Brad Malone's first career goal stood as Colorado's lone marker, while Jean- Sebastien Giguere gave up all three goals on 34 shots for the Avs, who have lost five straight and sit last in the NHL with 29 points.
After a scoreless first frame, Colorado broke through early in the second when Tyson Barrie fired a shot from the right point that Malone got his stick on in front and re-directed high over the shoulder of MacDonald for a 1-0 lead at the 1:45 mark of the stanza.
Calgary pulled even just past the midpoint of the period when Mark Giordano flipped a shot on net from just above the right circle that deflected off Cervenka in front and slipped past Giguere to make it 1-1 at the 10:36 mark.
The Flames then jumped in front with just over three minutes left when Roman Horak recovered a loose puck below the Colorado goal line before finding a cutting Cammalleri and the Calgary center pounded home a one-timer from in front to give the Flames a 2-1 lead at the 16:53 mark.
A hooking penalty against Cervenka at the 15:24 mark of the third gave the Avalanche a late power-play opportunity, but Tanguay buried a short-handed marker just over a minute later to end the Avalanche's comeback bid.
MacDonald made 14 saves over the final 20 minutes to keep the Flames in front.
"Give their goalie credit, he played a great game," Colorado center Matt Duchene admitted. "We had chances all night long and we just couldn't convert."
