London, England – England midfielder Frank Lampard was ruled out of Euro 2012 on Thursday due to a thigh injury suffered in training.
The 33-year-old Lampard was initially included on England's 23-man roster for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine, but will now be replaced by midfielder Jordan Henderson pending approval from UEFA.
Lampard, who recently helped Chelsea win the Champions League final, has made 90 appearances for England and scored 23 goals since making his debut for the Three Lions in 1999.
"It's a huge blow for the team," England manager Roy Hodgson said. "The fact that the doctor cannot guarantee Frank could take part in any of the group matches means we have to replace him in the central midfield area."
Henderson has been capped twice for England, but could battle for a starting role with Lampard sidelined following the injury Wednesday.
Lampard is the third England player to leave due to injury, following Gareth Barry and third-choice goalkeeper John Ruddy.
England will open its Euro 2012 campaign on June 11 against France in Group D.
