Two top-10 lightweights are both gunning for a matchup with former champion Anthony Pettis, but as of yet the UFC hasn't decided on who will land the prized fight.
According to a report via UFC Tonight, No. 4-ranked fighter Eddie Alvarez and No. 7-ranked Edson Barboza are both clamoring for a fight with Pettis later this year.
Alvarez last competed in June when he won a close decision over former title challenger Gilbert Melendez to get his first win since joining the UFC in 2014.
The victory moved his UFC record to 1-1 overall after suffering a loss to Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone in his debut.
Meanwhile, Barboza is fresh off a "Fight of the Night" performance in July when he defeated Paul Felder in a back-and-forth battle in Chicago.
Barboza has gone 3-1 over his last four fights while climbing up the divisional rankings. Barboza told FOX Sports just last week that he was hoping for an opponent in the top five at lightweight, and Pettis certainly fits the bill.
"I want to fight somebody in the top five," Barboza said. "I'm No. 7, so I would love for the UFC to give me the opportunity to fight someone in front of me. Anybody, all the guys in front of me, I'm ready."
Pettis wasn't available for comment so there's no word on his interest in facing either Alvarez or Barboza for his next fight. Pettis has been out of action since March when he lost the UFC lightweight title to Rafael dos Anjos.
