Toronto, Canada – LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Anaheim Ducks forward Teemu Selanne underwent surgery to repair a broken jaw and is expected to be out for two-six weeks, the team announced on Thursday on their website (ducks.nhl.com).
Selanne was injured on Wednesday during the third period of his team's 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins when he was hit in the face with a puck that ricocheted off a stick.
The 39-year-old right wing had just returned from a broken hand that sidelined him for 17 games.
"That is unfortunate for Teemu," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle told reporters. "We all know how much he loves to play the game. Injuries are things that happen during the course of the season. I don't know how to explain it. Why does it happen to one player over another?"
Selanne, who has 23 points in 30 games this season and is five goals short of 600 for his career, will have a fight to be fit for Finland's opening game of the Vancouver Olympics on February 17.
