LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed slugger Manny Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list to allow his right hamstring to recover.
Ramirez strained the hamstring on Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants and his placement on the disabled list is retroactive to Wednesday. He will be eligible to return to the lineup after the All-Star break.
"To me, there's no reason to gamble," Dodgers manager Joe Torre told reporters. "We already had lost him for six games. For the tradeoff of having him as a pinch-hitter, I thought this was safer. When the second half starts, we won't have time to nurse him."
Ramirez was previously on the disabled list from April 23 to May 8 with a right calf strain.
The 12-times All-Star is batting .322 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs in 59 games.
