The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired catcher Ramon Hernandez in exchange for pitcher Aaron Harang and cash considerations, general manager Ned Colletti announced on Saturday.

Hernandez, 36, hit .217 with five home runs and 28 RBI in 52 games with the Rockies last season, while battling hand and hamstring injuries. He was designated for assignment by the team on March 28.

A 14-year veteran with the Athletics (1999-2003), Padres (2004-05), Orioles (2006-08), Reds (2009-11) and Rockies, Hernandez has a career average of .264 with 166 home runs, 751 RBI and 1,335 hits.

Hernandez is expected to provide catching depth behind A.J. Ellis.

"Ramon gives us invaluable veteran experience and additional leadership at the catching position," said Colletti. "He's worked with great pitching staffs in the past and we feel he will provide solid contributions to our pitchers and be a great resource for A.J."

Harang, who turns 35 in May, went 10-10 with a 3.61 ERA in 31 starts for the Dodgers last season, but failed to crack the club's deep rotation during the spring.

In 11 seasons with the Athletics (2002-03), Reds (2003-10), Padres (2011) and Dodgers, Harang has a 105-104 career record with a 4.19 ERA and 1,460 strikeouts in 299 games (293 starts).
