London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Two-time reigning and three-time overall champion Novak Djokovic posted another round-robin victory Wednesday at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.
The hot world No. 1 star ran his indoor winning streak to 29 matches by whipping third-seeded Australian Open champ Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 6-0 in 65 minutes at this exclusive eight-player event at The O2 Arena.
Djokovic improved to 16-3 lifetime against Wawrinka, who stunned the Serb in a brilliant five-set quarterfinal at the Aussie Open back in January. Djokovic beat the Swiss in a semifinal here at last year's Tour Finals.
The Wimbledon titlist Djokovic is now 2-0 in his four-player "Group A," which also features Wawrinka (1-1), Tomas Berdych (1-1) and Marin Cilic (0-2).
The 27-year-old Djokovic, who topped Rafael Nadal in last year's finale in London, is now just one win away from clinching the year-end No. 1 ranking for the third time in four years.
Also on Day 4, the sixth-seeded Berdych blew past the eighth-seeded U.S. Open champion Cilic 6-3, 6-1 in 75 minutes. The Czech Berdych tallied four service breaks, compared to zero for his Croatian counterpart.
Berdych is now 6-4 lifetime against Cilic, including 2-2 this season.
Surprisingly, all eight matches so far this week have ended in straight sets.
A four-player "Group B" boasts second-seeded Wimbledon champion Roger Federer (2-0), fourth-seeded U.S. Open runner-up Kei Nishikori (1-1), fifth- seeded British favorite Andy Murray (1-1) and seventh-seeded Canadian slugger Milos Raonic (0-2).
The 17-time Grand Slam king Federer will battle Murray and Nishikori will take on Raonic in some more round-robin play on Thursday. Federer and Murray have split 22 career matchups, but Federer is 2-0 this year and 3-0 versus Murray all-time at the ATP Finals.
Federer, who is making a record 13th consecutive appearance at this event and still has an outside chance of capturing the year-end No. 1 ranking, holds the record for the most titles at this prestigious tournament with six.
If Federer can qualify for his 12th career Finals semifinal, it would tie a record set by Ivan Lendl. The 33-year-old Swiss icon would also be the oldest player to advance to the last four at this event since Andre Agassi finished as a runner-up back in 2003.
Nishikori, Raonic and Cilic are making their ATP Finals debuts this week.
Round-robin action will be staged through Friday, followed by the semifinals on Saturday and lucrative final on Sunday.
