D.C. United announced on Wednesday that the club has declined the contract options on nine players, including veterans Santino Quaranta and Clyde Simms.

"We need to have some flexibility with the players we're targeting to bring in," general manager Dave Kasper told MLSsoccer.com. "The unfortunate part of dealing in a salary cap environment is you always have difficult choices every year with your rosters."

Quaranta has appeared in nearly 100 games for United during his time with the club, scoring 11 goals, while Simms has been with the team since 2005, playing in 182 matches for D.C.

Marc Burch, Devon McTavish, Kurt Morsink and Brandon Barklage were among the other notable players whose options were declined.
