Columbus Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer and forward Tommy Heinemann have undergone microfracture surgery and will be out for extended periods, the Major League Soccer club announced Friday.

Hesmer has surgery on his right hip and will be sidelined at least six months, and Heinemann had surgery on his left knee and will be out nine to 12 months.

The 30-year-old Hesmer has spent nine seasons in MLS, and is in his sixth with the Crew. He had not played yet this season, but started 32 of the team's 34 matches last season.

The 25-year-old Heinemann is in his second season with the Crew. He played 28 games last season, including 12 starts, and had three goals and an assist. He made his only appearance this season as a substitute.
