Strasbourg, France – French favorite and last year's runner-up Alize Cornet was among Wednesday's second-round winners at the $235,000 Strasbourg International tennis event, a final clay-court French Open tune-up.
The third-seeded Cornet handled Polish qualifier Magda Linette 6-3, 6-4 on Day 3 at Strasbourg Tennis Club.
Cornet, who lost to former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in last year's Strasbourg finale, will meet seventh-seeded South African Chanelle Scheepers in Thursday's quarterfinals. Scheepers moved on by overcoming American qualifier Shelby Rogers 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
A pair of seeds suffered setbacks, as Japanese Misaki Doi upended fourth- seeded Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) and Georgian Anna Tatishvili overcame fifth-seeded Romanian Monica Niculescu 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Other second-round action saw Italian qualifier Flavia Pennetta whip Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-2, 6-3; Canadian Eugenie Bouchard drill Italian Camila Giorgi 6-3, 6-0; Czech Lucie Hradecka paste American Lauren Davis 6-2, 6-2; and Swede Johanna Larsson drop French wild card Virginie Razzano 6-3, 6-3.
The other quarterfinal matchups will pit Pennetta against Doi, Hradecka versus Larsson, and Bouchard against Tatishvili. Hradecka was a runner-up here in 2009.
The 2013 Strasbourg champion will collect $41,000.
