West Bromwich, England (SportsNetwork.com) - West Bromwich fired manager Steve Clarke on Saturday just hours after his team's 1-0 defeat at Cardiff City.

The loss extends West Brom's winless streak to six games and leaves the Baggies in 16th place, just two points above the relegation zone.

Clarke took charge at West Brom in the summer of 2012 and guided the club to an impressive eighth-place finish in the league last term.

But the team has struggled to replicate that form this season, and a club statement cited poor results in 2013 as the reason for Clarke's departure.

"This was the unanimous decision of the football club's board of directors following a disappointing performance throughout 2013," read a statement from the club.

"Albion have won only seven of their 34 Premier League games during the calendar year - a 20 percent win percentage yielding a total of only 31 points - despite a substantial investment in the first-team squad."

The club also confirmed that assistant head coach Keith Downing will assume control of the first team while the search for a new manager takes place.
