Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova pulled off a surprise upset over third-seeded former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova on Monday to reach the quarterfinals at the Australian Open.
The 20th-seeded Cibulkova dropped the first set to the 2008 Aussie Open champ, but rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph over the Russian superstar Sharapova.
The 24-year-old Slovak will be making her first ever quarterfinal appearance at Melbourne Park, with her best previous result coming in 2009, when she reached the fourth round.
Cibulkova awaits the winner of the fourth-round matchup between eighth-seeded Jelena Jankovic and No. 11 seed Simona Halep.
