Champions Leaugue: Barcelona Rolls over Bayer Leverkusen 7-1; Messi Scores 5

Barcelona absolutely destroyed Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 in their Champions League mis-match on Wednesday. And the scandalous score-line does not capture the overwhelming dominance by the Catalan club during the match against the good – but all too human – German side.

Call it another exhibit in the case for Barcelona being one of the best clubs in history.

Messi the Great

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, the gifted Argentine striker, scored five times and Cristian Tello, Barcelona’s talented young prospect scored twice in his European debut.

Messi, who was named FIFA's 2011 best player in the world, the first player to win the honor three years in a row, opened the scoring in the 25th minute, on a through pass from Spanish midfielder Xavi. Running into the area, Messi artfully scooped the ball over the out-stretched arm of Bernd Leno, the Bayer Leverkusen goal keeper.

Messi scored again in the 42nd, 50th, 58th and 84th minutes.

Karim Bellarabi scored a consolation goal for Bayer Leverkusen in the 90th.

With the victory, Barcelona moves on to the quarter finals of the competition.
