Cecil Fisk, the father of Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk, has died. He was 97.

The Stringer Funeral Home in Claremont, N.H., says Fisk died Thursday at Springfield Hospital in Vermont after a brief illness.

A resident of Charlestown, N.H., Fisk farmed and was a longtime employee at Jones and Lamson Machine Co. in Springfield. He played basketball and encouraged a love of sports among his six children.

Carlton Fisk played 24 years for the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. During his Hall of Fame induction speech in 2000, he said his father contributed the most to his being stubborn and determined.
