NEW YORK (Reuters) - Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme, sidelined this month by a broken finger, was shut down for the season when the Panthers placed him on injured reserve on Thursday.

Delhomme, 34, tested his injured throwing hand in practice the previous day for Sunday's road game against the New York Giants but had trouble gripping the ball, the NFL team said on its website (www.panthers.com).

Third-year veteran Matt Moore, who replaced Delhomme as signal caller, is expected to continue at quarterback for the 6-8 Panthers in their last two games of the season.
