New Coastal Carolina head football coach Joe Moglia announced Wednesday that Clayton Carlin has been named the Chanticleers' defensive coordinator.

Carlin has spent the last two seasons as defensive coordinator at Bucknell. He also coached the linebackers in 2010 and was promoted to assistant head coach last season, shifting his focus to the secondary.

His 2011 Bison defense ranked third in the FCS in rush defense and 12th in total defense.

Carlin also has been an assistant coach on the collegiate level at Cornell, New Mexico State, Villanova, Buffalo and Delaware Valley. He was a graduate assistant at Nebraska under legendary coach Tom Osborne from 1994-96. During that time, the Cornhuskers went 36-2 and won two national titles.

Coastal Carolina finished with a 7-4 record, including 3-3 in the Big South Conference, last season.
