ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez has been scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday with a sore back.
Martinez (13-6, 2.91) suffered the injury in his last start Thursday in Arizona.
Left-hander Marco Gonzales will be recalled from Triple-A Memphis to make the start against Washington. Gonzales is 1-4 with a 5.20 ERA in 13 starts.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Martinez is expected to miss just one start, adding "We've had our eyes open looking for a time to get him some rest."
