St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a contract extension with pitcher Jake Westbrook on Tuesday.
The agreement will keep Westbrook with the Cardinals through the 2013 season and includes and mutual option for 2014.
Westbrook, who was acquired on July 31, 2010 in a trade from the Cleveland Indians, is 28-22 with a 4.01 earned run average in 69 starts with the Cardinals.
"Jake continues to be a steady and sturdy part of our pitching staff and we are pleased to announce his extension," Cardinals senior vice president and general manager John Mozeliak said. "His veteran presence is important to the makeup of our team. Jake has demonstrated his leadership with his commitment and hard work, resulting in both a terrific 2012 season and career."
This season, the 34-year-old Westbrook is 12-9 with a 3.50 ERA in 24 starts. He is leading the National League in ground balls induced with 22 and ground ball percentage at 73.3 percent.
Westbrook's contract was set to expire after the 2012 season.
