Helsinki, Finland – Dion Phaneuf scored two goals, Devan Dubnyk made 24 saves and Canada posted a resounding 8-0 win Saturday over Kazakhstan to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2012 World Championship.
Captain Ryan Getzlaf and Duncan Keith collected three assists apiece for the Canadians, who broke the game open with a five-goal third period barrage.
Canada is pacing the tournament with 16 points, one more than Russia and Sweden. Both of those teams are in the other group.
Earlier in Helsinki, Slovakia exploded for four goals in a span of three minutes and 40 seconds during the second period en route to a 5-1 win over Belarus, while France pulled off an upset with a 4-2 win over Switzerland.
In Stockholm, Gabriel Landeskog and Erik Karlsson both registered a goal and an assist in the Swedes' 4-0 shutout of Italy.
Viktor Fasth stopped 19 shots for Sweden, which secured a berth in the quarterfinals.
Also in Stockholm, Norway blanked Latvia, 3-0, and Germany edged Denmark, 2-1.
