Bruins top Red Wings

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Daniel Paille scored a pair of goals to help the Boston Bruins defeat the Detroit Red Wings 5-3 on Sunday.

After only scoring once in his first 57 games this season, Paille now has four in his last six as Boston extended its point streak to five games.

Brad Marchand scored a goal for the fourth straight game and David Pastrnak and Loui Eriksson netted a goal apiece for the Bruins. Niklas Svedberg made 36 saves to earn the win.

"I thought in the first period, our forecheck was extremely good," said Bruins coach Claude Julien. "We showed some great character there to come out today."

Detroit lost for the second straight game after Jonas Gustavsson allowed four goals on 23 shots in two periods of work. Jimmy Howard relieved him at the start of the third period and allowed one goal on seven shots.

Gustav Nyquist, Luke Glendening and Marek Zidlicky accounted for the Red Wings' goals.

Past the midpoint of the second period, Boston added its second short-handed goal after a Red Wings turnover in the neutral zone. Paille picked up the loose puck, split the defense and Gustavsson could not get all of his shot.

"We're putting ourselves in tough situations," said Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg. "When we have the puck, all of a sudden, they have the puck. In the second period, if you do that a few times, you'll get caught and eventually they will score."

Paille put the Bruins up 4-1 with 1:21 remaining in the second. The puck was on edge when he shot it, and Gustavsson could not catch the fluttering shot.

Less than two minutes into the third period, Glendening cut Detroit's deficit to two with a wrist shot from the circle that got through Svedberg's pads.

Boston responded quickly though, this time against Howard. He made the initial save on Patrice Bergeron's slot, but Eriksson was in front of the net to jam the rebound through Howard's five-hole.

The Red Wings only needed two minutes to cut their deficit to two goals again. Zidlicky skated along the blue line before finding a shooting lane where he wristed the puck by Svedberg with Zdeno Chara screening his goalie.

Detroit outshot the Bruins 17-7 in the third but could not get any closer.

Marchand opened the scoring just over four minutes into the game. On the penalty kill, Stephen Weiss could not corral an odd bounce off the boards in the neutral zone and Marchand took advantage, skating in and burying his fifth goal in his last four games.

Nyquist tied the game a few minutes later when he stripped the puck from Milan Lucic, skated to the slot and snapped the puck past Svedberg.

Just two minutes after Nyquist scored, Pastrnak restored Boston's lead on the power play when he wristed a shot from the circle. Gustavsson got a piece of the puck with his shoulder but not enough to keep the puck out of the net.

Boston improved to 4-6-2 in the second half of back-to-back sets ... Bergeron has five points in a four-game point streak ... Detroit defenseman Kyle Quincey recorded his 100th NHL assist ... The Bruins have scored first in eight straight games.
