Bronx, NY – Atlanta Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy will miss at least a year after it was determined he will need surgery to repair his partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.
After visiting Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, it was determined that Beachy will need what is more commonly known as Tommy John surgery. Andrews will oversee the surgical procedure on Thursday.
Beachy left Saturday's game against the Orioles after 3 2/3 innings because of discomfort in his right elbow.
Beachy was 5-5 with a major league-best 2.00 earned run average and had allowed 49 hits in 81 innings in his second major league season.
The Braves will promote Jair Jurrjens from Triple-A Gwinnett, where he went 3-4 with a 5.18 ERA. In four starts with Atlanta, Jurrjens, an All-Star in 2011, was 0-2 with a 9.37 ERA.
