Dominick Kumbela opened the scoring for the home side in the 14th minute while Havard Nielsen doubled its advantage seven minutes later.
Things got worse for the visitors in the 62nd minute when Andre Hoffmann was sent off, and Jan Hochscheidt added salt on Hannover's wounds by tacking on a late goal for the hosts.
Braunschweig is unbeaten in its last three Bundesliga contests to improve to 25 points, bringing the club to within two points of safety.
In Sunday's other Bundesliga contest, Hertha Berlin and Hoffenheim played to a 1-1 draw at the Olympic Stadium, keeping the two sides level in the table on 37 points apiece.
