TORONTO (Reuters) - The Toronto Blue Jays have signed infielder Edwin Encarnacion to a 2011 contract worth $2.5 million, the team said on Thursday.
The deal also includes a club option of $3.5 million for the 2012 season, Toronto said in a news release.
Encarnacion, 27, joined the Blue Jays in a 2009 trade with the Cincinnati Reds.
The first baseman/designated hitter from the Dominican Republic had a .244 batting average with 21 home runs and 51 runs batted in for 2010.
