Bloomington Regional: Day One

A three-run home run by Michael Davis in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed the Austin Peay Governors to get past the Florida Gators, 4-3, in the first game of the Bloomington Regional of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Davis struck out in his previous three plate appearances before homering for Austin Peay (46-13) which is the second-seed in the regional. Kacy Kemmer pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief to get the win and Tyler Rogers tossed a perfect ninth inning to earn the save.

Justin Shafer blasted a three-run home run in the sixth inning to account for Florida's (29-29) scoring. Jonathon Crawford put the Gators in a position to win as he pitched 6 1/3 innings and let up just one run but Ryan Harris was tagged for all three runs in the eighth to take the loss.

Chad Clark blasted a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning as part of a four-run rally that carried the Indiana Hoosiers to a 5-4 win over Valparaiso in the regional's other matchup.

After the fourth-seed Crusaders (30-21) scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning they held a 4-1 lead. In the bottom half of the inning Scott Donley grounded out for the first out but the Hoosiers' (43-14) next four batters connected for hits with the last Clark's game-winning home run.

Aaron Slegers and Scott Effross combined to toss 8 1/3 innings for Indiana but were responsible for all four runs scored by the Crusaders, though three were unearned. Ryan Halstead recorded the final out in the ninth and ended up as the winning pitcher.

Cole Webb pitched seven strong innings allowing just one run for Valparaiso but Karch Kowalczyk blew the save in the ninth by allowing the final four runs for Indiana.

On Saturday Florida and Valparaiso will meet up in the loser's bracket while Indiana and Austin Peay will play later in the day in the winner's bracket. The winner of the Florida/Valparaiso contest will face the loser between Indiana and Austin Peay on Sunday for a spot in the regional final. The loser of the Florida/Valparaiso contest on Saturday will be eliminated from the tournament.
