Baylor dismissed starting tight end Tre'Von Armstead from the football program for a team rules violation, the school announced Friday in a news release.
Armstead received all-Big 12 honors last season and was expected to play a prominent role this season in Baylor's explosive offense. He played in the season opener against SMU, but was held out of last week's game against Lamar for unspecified reasons.
Now off the team, Armstead's void could be filled by the largest tight end in America, 400-pound converted lineman LaQuan McGowan. McGowan gained national attention when he caught a touchdown pass in last season's Cotton Bowl against Michigan State, and numerous profiles were written about him during spring workouts when it became evident that coach Art Briles was serious about playing McGowan at tight end full time.
Armstead, who had five catches for 62 yards in his career, was one of three Baylor players suspended in the first two weeks of action for discipline reasons. Star defensive end Shawn Oakman and safety Orion Stewart were both held out of the opener against SMU. Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles and wide receivers coach Tate Wallis served a one-game suspension last week for a recruiting violation.
Baylor (2-0) is off this week and will play Rice on Sept. 26, wrapping up the non-conference portion of its schedule.
