When it came to total offense, no team came close to matching Baylor. The Bears also ended up as the top scoring team after national champion Florida State posted its lowest point total against Auburn in the BCS title game Monday night.
Baylor's average of 618 yards was 53 more than Oregon's 565 and the highest since the Andre Ware-led Houston Cougars amassed 625 yards a game in 1989.
The Bears averaged 52.4 points, tied with 1995 Nebraska for third all-time behind Army's 56 a game in 1944 and Houston's 53.5 in 1989.
Florida State went into Monday's game leading the nation in scoring average. The Seminoles' 34-31 win dropped their average to 51.6 points a game, the sixth-highest in NCAA history.
This was the first season two teams averaged better than 50 points a game.
Here's a look at some other notable statistics for the 2013 season:
RUSHING CHAMPS: Auburn's 232 yards on the ground against Florida State marked its lowest production since a September loss to LSU, but it was enough to give the Tigers the nation's No. 1 rushing average at 328 yards a game. That's 180 more a game than the Tigers ran for during the three-win season in 2012.
Doak Walker Award winner and Heisman Trophy finalist Andre Williams of Boston College was the top individual rusher at 167.5 yards a game. The 2012 rushing champion, Ka'Deem Carey of Arizona, was runner-up at 157.1.
CARR THE STAR: National passing champion Derek Carr of Fresno State wasn't at his best against Southern California in the Las Vegas Bowl, but he finished the season with 50 touchdown passes. That's the most since Oklahoma's Sam Bradford threw 50 in 2008. Carr was the only quarterback to throw for more than 5,000 yards, averaging 391 yards a game on 69 percent accuracy. Carr threw just eight interceptions in 659 attempts. Only Connor Halliday of Washington State threw more passes, and he was intercepted 22 times.
BEST BOWL PERFORMANCES: Clemson's Sammy Watkins found the spotlight with his 16 catches for 227 yards against Ohio State in the Orange Bowl. Don't forget about Mississippi State's Jameon Lewis, who caught nine balls for a school- and Liberty Bowl-record 220 yards against Rice. ... Oklahoma freshman Trevor Knight had completed 47 passes going into the Sugar Bowl. He hit on a bowl-record 32 for 348 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Alabama. ... Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater's 447 yards passing against Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl were the most in any bowl. ... Kermit Whitfield of Florida State and John Ross of Washington ran back kicks 100 yards. Whitfield's return gave the Seminoles their first lead against Auburn. He also had a 97-yarder against Wake Forest. Ross' 100-yarder came against BYU in the Fight Hunger Bowl.
PERFECT KICKER, AGAIN: For the second straight year, the nation's top field-goal kicker made all of his attempts. Boston College's Nate Freese went 20 for 20 this season and finished his career 70 of 81. Last season Tulane's Cairo Santos was 21 for 21.
EXTRA POINTS: When Auburn took a 7-3 lead against Florida State in the first quarter Monday, it marked the first time in 583 minutes, 42 seconds of game time that the Seminoles had trailed. ... Brandin Cooks of Oregon State led the nation with 133.1 yards receiving a game, edging Davante Adams' average of 132.2 for Fresno State. Cooks' 35 plays of 20 yards or longer were most in the nation. ... San Jose State linebacker Keith Smith's 159 tackles were most in the FBS. ... Washington State's Damante Horton intercepted five passes and returned three of them for touchdowns.
