Bayern Munich was held to a 1-1 draw at home by a stubborn Monchengladbach on Friday as Bayern needed a goal from Xherdan Shaqiri in the second half to claim a point.

The result lifts Bayern 12 points clear of second-place Bayer Leverkusen ahead of this weekend's action, while Monchengladbach sits in the top six.

Bayern defender Jerome Boateng was whistled for handling the ball inside his own penalty area in the 20th minute and Thorben Marx stepped to the spot to beat goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Monchengladbach maintained its lead into the second half thanks to some inspired play from goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

However, Bayern broke through shortly before the hour mark when Marx played a poor pass in his defensive third that was collected by Shaqiri, who slotted his shot past Ter Stegen.

Bayer Leverkusen has earned 13 of a possible 15 points from its last five games and will try to move to within nine points of Bayern with a home win against Hamburg on Saturday.

Defending champions Borussia Dortmund find themselves 15 points adrift of Bayern and the club travels to Hoffenheim on Sunday, while fourth-place Eintracht has lost two of its last three games and eyes three points at bottom-half Wolfsburg.

Schalke is on a five-match winless streak but still sits in fifth place and the club will entertain Freiburg, which resides two points behind Schalke ahead of Saturday's contest.

Dusseldorf will host Hannover with the club sitting six points above the drop zone, Mainz entertains a Stuttgart team that has won its last three games, Greuther Furth and Augsburg meet up at Trolli Arena in a battle of the bottom two sides in the Bundesliga and Werder Bremen hosts Nurnberg on Sunday with the two sides separated by two points.
