Basson earns narrow win on Sunshine Tour

Christiaan Basson collected 12 points on Saturday to come from behind and win the Investec Royal Swazi Sun Open.

Basson finished with 50 points at Royal Swazi Golf Club for a one-point win over Desvonde Botes and Danie van Tonder.

The tournament used a modified stableford scoring format, which awarded eight points for an albatross, five for an eagle, two for birdie and none for par. A point was deducted for bogey, and three were subtracted for double or worse.

Botes, the third-round leader, had 10 points in the final round, while van Tonder collected 11 as they shared second with 49 points.

Basson had four birdies and a bogey on the front nine to earn seven points. Around the turn, he had eight pars to go along with an eagle on the par-five 12th to get to 50.

Botes had three birdies and a bogey on both nines for his 10 points, while van Tonder earned seven points on the front nine with four birdies and a bogey. Van Tonder had an eagle and a birdie on the back nine, but also carded three bogeys, which cost him the title.

Dean Burmester also picked up 10 points on Saturday to take fourth with 45 points. Oliver Bekker earned nine points in the final round to end alone in fifth with 44.
