Indian Wells, CA – World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka easily won round match Sunday at the $5.535 million BNP Paribas Open, while former champion Vera Zvonareva pulled out because of an illness.
The top-seeded Azarenka, of Belarus, needed just over an hour to dispatch Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-2 and run her overall record to 19-0 this season, including three titles.
The reigning Australian Open champion converted four of her nine break points and won 83 percent of her first serves, moving on to face No. 14 seed Julia Goerges of Germany, who beat Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-3, 6-4.
Meanwhile, third-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova was upset in three sets by American Christina McHale, who rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.
Fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Italy's Flavia Pennetta; eight-seeded Li Na of China beat countrywoman Zheng Jie 6-1, 6-3; and wild card American Jamie Hampton downed Australian Jarmila Gajdosova 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 6-2.
Czech Klara Zakopalova moved on when Zvonareva, the ninth seed Russian, withdrew. American Vania King also pulled out, giving Angelique Kerber of Germany a walkover win.
