Marseille has now drawn its first two games of the season, while Auxerre has rebounded from a 3-1 defeat against Montpellier on the opening weekend to earn its first point.
It didn't take long for Marseille to jump in front as Mathieu Valbuena's free kick was headed on goal by Remy. His initial effort was saved by goalkeeper Olivier Sorin, but Remy pounced on the rebound and fired it home.
Another set piece shortly before halftime put Marseille up 2-0 when Valbuena's cross found Ayew at the back post and he held off his marker to nod the ball past Sorin.
But Auxerre answered quickly in the second half with Dennis Oliech setting up Traore's goal before a corner kick in the 81st minute pulled Auxerre level.
Dariusz Dudka swung the ball into the area for Contout, who smashed his shot past goalkeeper Steve Mandanda to snatch a point for his team.
