Brittany Lang won her first major championship Sunday in a playoff against Anna Nordqvist in the Women's U.S. Open after Nordqvist was assessed a heartbreaking two-stroke penalty for grounding her club in a bunker.

After both players finished the tournament at 6-under par, they entered a three-hole championship playff. Nordqvist and Lang both parred the first hole of the playoff (No. 16), but on the second hole Nordqvist barely grazed the sand before hitting her second shot.

The USGA reviewed the footage as play continued, and informed Nordqvist of the penalty after she hit her approach on the 18th hole. The playoff was tied before the penalty, but the two-stroke advantage gave Lang the win.

Many were furious with the USGA for how they handled delivering the news to Nordqvist in a situation eerily similar to the one Dustin Johnson faced just a few weeks ago at the men's U.S. Open. Nordqvist, though, wrote in an Instagram post that she's proud of the way she played and expects to get another chance at a major sometime soon.
