NEW YORK (Reuters) - Los Angeles Angels right-hander Jered Weaver was suspended six games by Major League Baseball on Tuesday for intentionally throwing a pitch at Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila.

Weaver was ejected from the game after throwing the pitch in the seventh inning right after the home plate umpire sensed trouble and issued warnings to him and both benches.

The pitcher appealed the suspension, meaning his ban will be held in abeyance until the process is complete, the league said in a statement.

In addition to Weaver, Angels manager Mike Scioscia was suspended one game for his pitcher's actions and will serve his ban during the Angels' game against Minnesota on Tuesday.
