45 and counting: Wittels extends hitting streak

MIAMI (AP) — Florida International's Garrett Wittels now has a 45-game hitting streak, tying the third-longest in NCAA Division I history.

Wittels singled in the fourth inning of FIU's game against South Alabama on Sunday, matching the 45-game streak Roger Schmuck of Arizona State put together in 1971.

Wittels has a hit in every game in which he's had an at-bat this season.

Only two others have had longer streaks in Division I play: Oklahoma State's Robin Ventura (58) in 1987 and Wichita State's Phil Stephenson (47) in 1981.

FIU's next game is Thursday at Florida Atlantic.
