Will : Bill Clinton’s “knowingly” a “all-purpose dodge”

George Will said Tuesday on "Special Report with Bret Baier" that President Bill Clinton’s claim that the Clinton Foundation had “never done anything knowingly inappropriate” by accepting foreign donations was "an all-purpose dodge."

"Knowingly is an interesting word, we've heard this before. No baseball player ever knowingly took human growth hormone, or knowingly took steroids. They thought it was flaxseed oil or something. It's an all-purpose dodge,” Will said.

Clinton's remarks came during an interview with NBC News in which the former president rejected the suggestion that the Clinton Foundation had violated rules by accepting foreign donations while his wife, Hillary Clinton, was secretary of state.

"There is no doubt in my mind that we have never done anything knowingly inappropriate in terms of taking money to influence any kind of American government policy,” Clinton said.

Will, a syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor, said that the former president’s answer does not really solve the issue Clinton now faces in the eyes of potential voters: “the question really isn't, 'did they disclose everything?' but even if they disclosed it, was it kosher what they were doing, taking this money from people with business before the United States government?

“This matters because, it seems to me as the world gets more complex and the issues more opaque, people tend to step back and say 'what we really want to know about the president isn't what he thinks about the velocity of M-1 and the federal reserve, it's...can you trust him. Or her. The attributes you want in a friend, neighbor or someone who's a custodian of your future, and this doesn't help," Will said.
