Talk about an air ball.
While speaking Tuesday at a rally at the famous Hickory Gym in Knightstown, Indiana – the gym where the famous basketball film Hoosiers was shot – Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz had a oops moment when he referred to the basketball hoop’s rim as a “basketball ring.”
“The amazing thing is, that basketball ring in Indiana, it’s the same height as it is in New York City and every other place in this country,” Cruz said, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Cruz’s slip was quickly picked by political junkies on social media who panned the Texas senator for his lack of hoops knowledge.
Speaking in Indianapolis on Wednesday morning, a repentant Cruz said his high school basketball coach would have made him run laps for messing up that badly.
“It was wonderful to be in Hickory Gym. Hoosiers is one of my favorite movies of all time. I have no doubt that my high school basketball coach… was horrified that I stumbled in speaking and called the rim a ring,” he said, adding jokingly to the scrum of reporters. “I know nobody in the media has ever stumbled over a word.”
