House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, a congressional aide and three other people were shot when a gunman opened fire at a Virginia baseball practice on Wednesday morning.

The gunman, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, fired more than 50 shots at Simpson Field just after 7 a.m., striking Scalise in the hip and an aide for Rep. Rogers Williams. Three other people -- two Capitol police officers and Tyson's government relations director Matt Mika -- were also shot. The team was practicing for Thursday's Congressional Baseball Game that was set to take place at Nationals Park, Fox News confirmed.

Hodgkinson was shot and later died from his injuries, President Donald Trump said.

Politicians, some of whom were at the game, took to Twitter to express their shock and concern.
