Politico's chief White House correspondent in 2013 reportedly offered the Clintons preferential treatment in return for access, according to a batch of newly released State Department emails obtained by Gawker.

Mike Allen reports for Politico on top issues in the nation's capital, and the most powerful people in the federal government read his morning newsletter with an eager devotion. He is well known in media and political circles as a connected journalist, and he boasts of an impressive level of access to top lawmakers and other Washington celebrities.

But that access "sometimes comes at the cost of his own credibility — as well as Politico's reputation as an adversarial news outlet," Gawker suggested Tuesday.
