Report: Iowa Farmers to Apologize for Salmonella Outbreak

The owners of the Iowa farms that were blamed for the salmonella outbreak that caused 1,600 people to get sick and led to the recall of 550 million eggs are expected to apologize during a House committee hearing Wednesday, according to the Des Moines Register.

Jack DeCoster and his son, Peter, are expected to pledge not to resume selling fresh eggs from their farms until the farms are free from disease.

"While we always believed we were doing the right thing, it is now very clear that we must do more," said Peter DeCoster, chief operating officer of the Wright County Egg operations, according to a ten-page statement obtained by the Des Moines Register.

Peter DeCoster is expected to outline a series of measures the farms are taking to be rid of the salmonella and how to prevent it in the future.

The House Energy and Commerce subcommittee will hold a hearing on the egg recall Wednesday.

The massive egg recall began Aug. 13.
