A spokesman says Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr.'s medical condition is more serious than initially believed and he's undergoing evaluation and treatment at an in-patient medical facility.

A statement from Jackson's office says the Chicago Democrat has grappled with "certain physical and emotional ailments privately for a long period of time."

But the statement gave no further details on Jackson's medical condition or where he's being treated.

The congressman's office announced last week that he had been on medical leave for two weeks and was being treated for exhaustion.

According to Thursday's statement, Jackson will require extended in-patient treatment.
