A super PAC tied to a white nationalist party is making robo calls in support of Donald Trump and telling residents in Minnesota and Vermont “Don’t vote for a Cuban.”
The call refers to Cuban-American candidates Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, both U.S. senators who are competing with Trump to be the GOP presidential nominee.
A white nationalist group, American Freedom Party, is behind the calls, according to the Daily Beast.
The super PAC also made similar anti-minority calls in Iowa, and Trump distanced himself from them.
"The white race is dying out in America and Europe because we are afraid to be called 'racist.' I am afraid to be called racist,” said the call. “Donald Trump is not a racist, but Donald Trump is not afraid. Don't vote for a Cuban. Vote for Donald Trump."
On its website, the American Freedom Party describes itself as "a Nationalist party that shares the customs and heritage of the European American people."
"We need a Nationalist Party interested in defending our borders, preserving our language and promoting our culture," it says. "The American Freedom Party is not beholden to foreign governments, special interest groups, nor Wall Street. The American Freedom Party is for America First!"
The Rubio assailed the calls, and demanded that Donald Trump take a high-profile stand against them.
"This is an outrageous robo-call that Donald Trump should immediately repudiate and demand that this group cease its operations," Rubio spokesman Alex Burgos said in a statement. "This is the lowest form of campaigning, and is the exact same type of dirty tricks Donald Trump has been decrying for weeks now."
