Conservatives are more than twice as likely than liberals to support efforts to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S. and to deport those who currently reside in the country illegally, according to the latest CNN/ORC poll.
A majority of self-identified conservatives (55 percent) said the government should focus on increasing deportation rates and preventing future waves of illegal immigration while only 22 percent of liberals chose that as their preferred solution. Instead, 75 percent of self-identified liberals said that lawmakers should primarily work toward developing a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants currently employed in the U.S.
In addition to ideology, Americans are generationally divided on the issue of illegal immigration. Roughly 70 percent of millennials support the development of a pathway toward legal residency whereas only 45 percent of Americans ages 50 and older share that attitude.
Ten percent of respondents in the same poll indicated that illegal immigration would be the most important issue to them in deciding which presidential candidate to vote for — placing it in fourth place behind terrorism, healthcare and the economy.
