"We had a very positive meeting with the president yesterday."

That was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's response Thursday when asked about her visit to the White House to speak with the President Obama, a stark contrast to reports that Pelosi was irked and upset -- at least behind-closed doors -- over recent comments by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

At a press conference Thursday with cameras rolling, she sharply changed her tone.

"There is absolutely no reason to think that the White House has been anything but cooperative with us in terms of our efforts to retain control of Congress," said Pelosi.

Pelosi initially showed displeasure with Gibbs’ comments Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press where he said there’s a possibility of Democrats losing the majority in the midterm elections.

At a closed-door meeting earlier in the week, according to Democrats who were at the meeting, Pelosi said: "How could he (Gibbs) know what's going on in our districts. Some may weigh his words more closely than others. We have made our disagreements known to the White House."

Speaker Pelosi said at the White House meeting they focused mainly on jobs and their agenda to move the country foward.

"Members have some concerns about jobs and that is the conversation that we had yesterday with the president. I have nothing but praise for (the president).... Whatever comment was made had nothing to do with what the president was doing and what the president was saying himself. We have no better leader or advocate for America's working families."

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said that the rift between the House Democrats and the White House was just another sign of their party cracking under the pressure of a failing economy.

"It was only a matter of time before the gloves came off. I just didn't know that the targets would be each other. The panic that is building amongst Democrats has turned into a full scale civil war this week when the President's spokesman suggested that his party could lose the House this fall," said Boehner.

Boehner went on to say that the Democratic members of Congress created this problem for themselves.

"Let's not forget the House Democrats gave President Obama every dollar, every tax hike, every stimulus program and every government takeover that he asked for and the one thing the American people asked the Democrats to do was say 'no', they never did."

A democratic aide said Pelosi's meeting with the president was positive and that the president said "we’re going to win this fall, and he’s going to fight for it." The aide also said the meeting focused on Wall Street reform, the Recovery Act and the need to highlight specific jobs that it has created.

Pelosi also tried to turn Gibbs' comment into campaign cash by blasting out a fundraising plea in an email sent to supporters Thursday:

"Friend,

Here is what will happen in November. Democrats will keep control of the House. Period.

While some Washington pundits are claiming that Republicans have the momentum, I remain more confident in our chances for victory as long as we have our secret weapon – you," the e-mail stated.
