For the first time since he's been president, Barack Obama will miss the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's annual gala.

The reason: the government shutdown.

Obama and first lady Michelle Obama were planning to attend the Washington event Wednesday, but both are canceling.

It's the first year as president that Obama won't attend the event, where actress Salma Hayek and others will be honored. The institute says Obama started attending in 2008 when he was a presidential candidate.

Much of the federal government shut down Tuesday after Congress missed the deadline to pass a temporary spending measure. It's the first shutdown in 17 years.

Obama is scratching other events off his calendar as well, such as trips to Malaysia and the Philippines, which were to be part of a trip to Asia next week, according to USA Today. Plans to participate in economic summits in Indonesia and Brunei are still on his schedule, the newspaper reported.
