Obama Monday Day Ahead...Iraq Troop Drawdown

President Obama spends Monday in Atlanta, GA where he will speak at the national convention of Disabled American Veterans. The president will outline the progress being made to meet the August 31st deadline set by his administration of drawing down combat troops from Iraq. In a speech excerpt released before his remarks, the president said, "make no mistake, our commitment in Iraq is changing-from a military effort led by our troops to a civilian effort led by our diplomats."

The White House plans to keep 50,000 U.S. troops in Iraq during the transition period with the last American soldier leaving by the end of next year. Senate Minority Leader Mich McConnell (KY) told Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace, President Obama cannot take credit for his Iraq decision. "The agreement with the Iraqis to go down to 50,000 troops was made under the previous administration," the Republican Senator said Sunday morning. "I think we've made progress, although it's still very difficult there because the bombings continue."

The Associated Press is reporting Monday that eight people were killed during two bombings and a drive-by shooting. The U.S. government maintains Iraqi forces are ready to take control of their country's security but statistics released by Iraqi authorities show July was the deadliest month for Iraqi's with over 500 individuals killed.

While in Atlanta, the president will also raise money for Democrats during a Democratic National Committee luncheon.
