President Obama predicted on Tuesday that a Democrat would succeed him in the White House, and said that's why other countries should believe that the U.S. will honor the climate commitments it makes in Paris this week.
"Let me first of all say, I'm anticipating a Democrat succeeding me," Obama said in Paris. "I'm confident in the wisdom of the American people on that front."
Obama had just been asked why other countries should believe the U.S. would hold up the climate deal reached under Obama, given staunch opposition from Republicans. Obama's prediction is essentially a prediction that Hillary Clinton will win the White House, as she's the clear leader among the few Democrats running.
But Obama said that even if a Republican were to win, the next president would likely see things differently on climate once in the White House.
