Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., signaled that Republicans would take a cautious approach to President-elect Trump's campaign pledge to push through a $1 trillion infrastructure bill.
Fiscal hawks have pushed back against any effort to pass a massive package aimed at repairing the nation's roads and bridges without spending offsets.
McConnell on Monday said he too will ensure that any infrastructure spending is paid for and wants to avoid an effort to replicate the $800 million stimulus bill passed in early 2009. Congress helped President Obama pass that historic package of tax cuts, safety-net spending, infrastructure projects and renewable energy investments to help the country recover from the 2008 recession.
"I think the details are really important, but I hope what we clearly avoid — and I'm confident that we will — is a trillion dollar stimulus that will take you back to 2009," McConnell said, arguing that the projects the 2009 stimulus produced few tangible results to sustain a long-term recovery.
