Charles Krauthammer told viewers Wednesday that the surest way for Donald Trump to unify a divided Republican party would be to surround himself with politically respected officials - even naming a cabinet ahead of the GOP convention this summer

Charles Krauthammer told viewers Wednesday on "Special Report with Bret Baier" that the surest way for Donald Trump to unify a divided Republican party would be to both surround himself with politically-respected officials and name a cabinet ahead of the convention.

"I think the way he unites a party most effectively would be in naming a team,” Krauthammer, a syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor, said.

Trump's best bet to mitigate fears within the party is to associate himself with established figures who can bring clout to his campaign, Krauthammer said.

"A lot of people are just afraid of this guy-- he's a novice, he doesn't know a lot, and he appears impulsive.”

"If he can choose a cabinet with people of stature and reassurance-- you know, get somebody who's respected in the party, with a long history, and he's going to be Secretary of Defense… that not only reassures you about the policy, but also, it's a nod from that respected individual that Trump's going to be ok," he added.

Krauthammer also said that, despite Trump's "slash and burn" campaign style, most of the party will rally around the presumptive GOP nominee.

"On the night you lose, you don't want to even think about supporting the other guy. In the end, you end up being united by the nature of the opposition," Krauthammer said. "It'll happen here."
