On doctor's orders, injuries have forced the Senate's top Democrat to skip the opening day of the new Congress.

Sen. Harry Reid suffered broken ribs and facial bones last week when an exercise machine broke at his home in Nevada. He also suffered a concussion.

Reid, 75, will assume the role of minority leader as Republicans take control of the Senate on Tuesday.

Reid tweeted a photo of him meeting with his leadership team Tuesday at his apartment in Washington. He sported a bandage over his blackened right eye.

Illinois Democrat Dick Durbin will assume duties as the Democratic floor manager until Reid returns.

Reid's office says he has spoken with President Obama several times since his accident and kept a busy schedule despite his injuries.
