He officially advises Donald Trump on national security, but Gen. Mike Flynn on Friday offered up some guidance on how the GOP presidential candidate should handle another issue.

Flynn appeared on Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends," where he said Trump is more than ready to handle criticism of his treatment of former Miss Universe Alicia Machado. Trump has taken heat for comments about the 1996 winner of the pageant he owned after she gained a reported 40 pounds while wearing the tiara.

Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton introduced Machado at Monday's debate, and sought to paint Trump as a fat-shaming chauvinist, touching off a week of back and forth on Trump's treatment of women and Machado's own checkered past.

But Flynn said Clinton opened herself up to criticism dating back to her husband's presidency, when she was accused of silencing women Bill Clinton had affairs with or allegedly mistreated.

“I think part of it is how Hillary Clinton has poorly treated women for many, many years, and i think it came up a bunch of times the other night was how often," Flynn told "Fox & Friends." "I mean, all these new ideas, good ideas that hillary clinton has, why hasn't she been doing this for the last 25, 30 years?"
